In a significant and alarming incident in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, State Police have apprehended a man in connection with the shooting of a police officer.
The events unfolded around 4:30 p.m. on Friday when St. Johnsbury police responded to a domestic violence call at 261 Portland Street. As officers arrived on the scene to assess the situation, a St. Johnsbury police captain sustained gunshot wounds.
The injured St. Johnsbury police captain has been identified as Captain Jason Gray, a well-respected member of the St. Johnsbury police force with nearly 25 years of service.
Following the shooting, Captain Gray was immediately airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he is currently reported to be in serious but stable condition. His recovery is being closely monitored as the community remains hopeful for his swift return to health.
The suspect has been named as 38-year-old Scott Mason, also from St. Johnsbury. In the early hours of Sunday morning, around 2:00 a.m., Mason was located and arrested by Vermont State Police at a residence situated at 251 Portland Street—the property adjacent to the site of the shooting incident.
Vermont State Police have formally charged Mason with attempted second-degree murder, as well as aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer that resulted in serious bodily injury to Captain Gray. It has been disclosed that Mason is facing additional, unrelated charges, details of which will likely emerge as the investigation continues.
