Monday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox announced that outfielder Jarren Duran has been given a two-game suspension without pay. The suspension will begin with the game against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park. Additionally, the salary withheld from the suspension will be donated to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), an organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for the LGBTQ+ community.
Duran issued an apology through the team after using what some have called a derogatory term toward a fan. In response to a taunt from a fan, Duran directed what some are calling a homophobic slur towards them, prompting widespread criticism.
In his apology, Duran expressed deep regret and acknowledged the offense he caused to many. He directed his apology not only to the Red Sox organization but also to the LGBTQ+ community, and emphasized the importance of being a positive role model for young fans. He intends to use this experience as an opportunity for personal growth and education for himself and his teammates.
Despite this incident, it’s important to note that Duran has had a successful season, earning All-Star Game MVP recognition and achieving impressive statistics in batting and home runs.
