The Worcester Red Sox hosted the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs at Polar Park in Worcester, MA, on Tuesday night. The WooSox were coming off of a series against the Syracuse Mets in which only five games were played – the Sunday game was suspended in the top of the fifth and will be made up on Sept. 10. The Sox won three of the five games that were completed. Shane Drohan took the mound for Worcester in the game on Tuesday.
Lehigh Valley scored the first run of the game in the top of the first as Scott Kingery, who doubled in his at-bat, scored on a line drive single from Kody Clemens. Roman Anthony, who was making his WooSox debut after being promoted from AA Portland earlier in the week, doubled on his first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning. He and Triston Casas would score and give Worcester a 2-1 lead as Casas homered to right field on a 2-0 count with one out.
The next score came by way of Worcester in the bottom of the sixth inning Vaugh Grissom homered to center field, extending their lead to 3-1.
They would build a 4-1 lead headed into the eighth inning and despite Lehigh Valley adding two runs in that inning to close it to 4-3, the WooSox were able to close it out in the ninth for a series-opening win.
The two teams will meet for Game 2 of the series at Polar Park Wednesday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET.
