The US Women’s National Team played their first game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup against Vietnam in Group E play in New Zealand on Friday night. This was the first game as the USWNT looked to win their third consecutive Women’s World Cup title.
The first goal of the game off the foot of Sophia Smith in the 14th minute. The US had an early 1-0 lead at that point. Smith would add her second goal of the match in extra time at the end of the first half, and the USWNT took a 2-0 lead.
Lindsey Horan would add the third and final goal for the women in the 77th minute, capping off an opening shutout victory in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The victory is the US’ 13th consecutive, a tournament record.
The USWNT’s next match in Group E play will be Wednesday when they take on the Netherlands. That match is set to begin at 9 p.m.
