HARTFORD — Connecticut will lower U.S. and state flags Friday to honor Elvin Hernandez, the Department of Transportation employee killed while performing road maintenance on Interstate 95 in Fairfield. Gov. Ned Lamont ordered flags at state buildings and properties lowered from sunrise to sunset, coinciding with memorial and interment services in Bridgeport and Easton.

Hernandez was struck by a motor vehicle while working along the highway last week, according to the governor’s announcement. Lamont described his death as a reminder of the danger faced by road crews and first responders.

“Elvin Hernandez was a dedicated state employee and public servant, and I join his family, friends, and colleagues at the Connecticut Department of Transportation in mourning his passing,” Lamont said. “This is a tragic situation that never should have happened, and it is a stark reminder to all drivers about the critical importance of showing respect to all road maintenance workers and first responders while working on the roadside. I am directing flags to be flown at half-staff to honor Elvin’s life and selfless commitment to his community.”

The directive covers the State Capitol and other state-operated buildings, grounds and facilities. Municipalities, schools, businesses and residents are encouraged to participate for the same period, with other flags lowered so none flies above the U.S. flag.
