TOLLAND, Conn. — A 33-year-old Enfield man already facing serious charges in a separate Connecticut State Police investigation was arrested again Friday, this time on two counts of illegal possession of a large-capacity magazine following a weapons compliance investigation. Joshua Freitag was taken into custody at Rockville Superior Court on an active arrest warrant and ordered held on $20,000 bond.
The new case traces back to an investigation that began after Freitag was arrested Aug. 18 on charges of murder, home invasion and risk of injury to a minor. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, one of Freitag’s registered firearms, a Glock Model 35 Gen 4 .40-caliber pistol, was seized as evidence during that investigation with an empty 10-round magazine inside the pistol grip. Investigators also recovered 10 .40-caliber shell casings.
A weapons compliance order was subsequently issued for Freitag’s remaining registered firearms. Investigators determined three other firearms were registered to him, including a Mossberg Model 88 12-gauge shotgun, a Ruger Wrangler .22-caliber revolver and a Canik SFX Rival 9mm pistol.
The investigation then moved to a residence in Somers, where a person represented by an attorney agreed to surrender weapons being held on Freitag’s behalf. Investigators recovered the Mossberg shotgun and additional firearms, along with a locked black metal safe and a locked red range-style bag that were taken to Troop C in Tolland.
A search and seizure warrant was obtained for the locked containers. Investigators opened the red bag and recovered a Ruger Wrangler .22-caliber revolver registered to Freitag. Inside the black metal safe, investigators found a Ruger SR45 .45-caliber pistol along with ammunition and magazines.
The discovery inside that safe became the focus of the new criminal case.
Investigators reported finding two Glock .40-caliber magazines, each with a 22-round capacity and each loaded with 21 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition. A separate Ruger SR45 magazine had a 10-round capacity and contained 10 rounds. Investigators also recovered six loose rounds of .22-caliber ammunition.
The affidavit states the two Glock magazines contained the same mixture of ammunition: 12 hollow-point .40-caliber rounds followed by nine full-metal-jacket rounds. Investigators reported that the hollow-point ammunition was PPU brand and was consistent with shell casings recovered during the Aug. 18 investigation.
Investigators determined that the Glock Model 35 seized during the earlier investigation was the only firearm registered to Freitag capable of accepting the two large-capacity Glock magazines recovered during the search. State licensing records listed Freitag’s possession date for that firearm as July 17, 2021.
An arrest warrant was issued charging Freitag with two counts of possession of a large-capacity magazine. The warrant set bail at $20,000.
Freitag was arrested at approximately 9:58 a.m. Friday at Rockville Superior Court. He was turned over to the custody of judicial marshals for same-day arraignment, with the criminal information summary listing a total bond of $20,000.
