There’s nothing better than stepping out of the shower and wrapping yourself in a soft, fluffy towel. The secret to keeping towels that way isn’t expensive products—it’s smart washing habits.
The biggest trick is simple: skip the fabric softener. While it may seem like it makes towels softer, it actually leaves behind a waxy coating that builds up over time. That coating reduces absorbency and flattens the fibers, making towels feel stiff instead of plush.
Instead, wash towels in warm water with a moderate amount of detergent—too much soap can create residue that weighs fibers down. Every few washes, add a half cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar helps break down buildup, refresh fibers, and restore softness without leaving a scent behind.
When drying, avoid over-drying. High heat for too long can damage fibers and make towels rough. Shake towels out before placing them in the dryer to fluff the fibers, and consider tossing in dryer balls to improve airflow and softness naturally.
Finally, don’t overload the washer or dryer. Towels need room to move freely so water and air can circulate properly.
With a few small adjustments, you can keep your towels fluffy, absorbent, and spa-worthy for years—without any special products required.
