Boston cops are warning residents about a slick phone scam after a Dorchester victim was conned out of cash by someone posing as a police sergeant.
According to investigators, the victim got a call on Tuesday, September 30, from (617) 634-5528, with the caller claiming to be a Boston Police sergeant. The scammer told the victim they owed money for a court-related matter and needed to make payments through Zelle to several phone numbers he provided. The victim ended up sending two payments before realizing it was a scam.
Police are reminding the public that the Boston Police Department will never call and demand money, banking info, or electronic transfers as part of any investigation or legal issue.
Officials say anyone who gets a suspicious call like this should hang up immediately, verify the claim by contacting the agency directly, and never send money or personal details over the phone.
Anyone with information or who may have received similar calls is urged to contact Boston Police or report it anonymously by calling 1-800-494-TIPS, texting “TIP” to CRIME (27463), or visiting the Boston Police CrimeStoppers website.
Police say all anonymous tipsters’ identities will be protected.
