The Department of Defense announced a change in duty status for military personnel supporting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, transitioning troops from Title 10 to Title 32 status. The shift affects 1,200 currently deployed service members and includes 500 newly authorized personnel, bringing the total number of troops assigned to the mission to approximately 1,700.

The change follows a review of operational requirements conducted in coordination with ICE. Defense officials determined that some tasks may involve direct interaction with individuals in ICE custody, necessitating the expanded authorities afforded under Title 32.

As part of the transition, active-duty Marine Corps and Naval Reserve personnel currently assigned to the mission will return to their home stations. National Guard troops, operating under Title 32, will assume their duties to maintain continuity in operations.

The military support stems from a May 9, 2025 request for assistance from the Department of Homeland Security. Troops are tasked with case management, transportation, logistical support, and clerical functions tied to the processing of individuals at ICE detention facilities.

By handling these responsibilities, military personnel free up ICE agents to focus on core enforcement activities, enhancing the agency’s overall capacity. The Department of Defense reaffirmed its commitment to assisting DHS in securing the nation’s borders and supporting immigration enforcement efforts.
