Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) James Honea will retire on September 12, 2025, concluding a distinguished 38-year career in the United States Navy.
“It has been a profound privilege and honor to serve as your MCPON,” Honea said. “I will carry with me the countless memories of meeting Sailors across the Fleet, hearing about your remarkable achievements, as well as the level of trust you placed in me to advocate for you and your families. During my tenure it has been my mission to remove barriers and improve the quality of life for you and your family.”
Honea became the Navy’s 16th MCPON on September 8, 2022. During his time in the role, he prioritized Sailor welfare through direct engagement and strategic advocacy. His efforts contributed to notable policy reforms, including a historic 15 percent pay raise for junior enlisted Sailors, and improvements in housing, medical care, childcare, and spouse employment.
Working closely with Congress and Department of Defense officials, Honea helped shape legislation that advanced quality-of-life standards for Navy personnel and their families. Within the Navy, he also spearheaded updates to enlisted leadership development and performance evaluations, including a modernization of the Chief Petty Officer evaluation system.
“Since 1775, the United States Navy has been operating forward to defend our nation and defeat those who challenge our freedom,” Honea said in his farewell message. “Every one of you embody the fighting spirit, honoring the legacy of those who came before you. As I embark on the next chapter of my life, I will forever cherish the impact you’ve had on me and look forward to crossing paths with you again in the Fleet.”
