U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested a Jamaican national in Biddeford last week after he allegedly attempted to unlawfully purchase a firearm while residing in the United States without legal status.
Jon Luke Evans was taken into custody on July 25 by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston, in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). At the time of his arrest, Evans was serving as a reserve police officer with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department.
According to ICE, Evans admitted that he attempted to purchase the firearm for use in his role as a police officer. His attempt triggered a federal alert, prompting an ATF investigation and subsequent coordination with ICE officers, who arrested him for violating immigration laws.
Evans lawfully entered the U.S. through Miami International Airport on September 24, 2023, but overstayed his visa. He was scheduled to depart the country on October 1, 2023, but failed to board his flight, rendering his presence in the U.S. unlawful.
This case follows a similar incident in April, when ICE officers in Falmouth arrested Gratien Milandou Wamba, a 32-year-old citizen of Congo who was working as a corrections officer while unlawfully present in the U.S. Wamba was also taken into custody after allegedly attempting to illegally purchase a firearm.
