HARTFORD, Conn. (July 14, 2025) — Governor Ned Lamont announced Monday that Connecticut will activate its Extreme Hot Weather Protocol beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, in response to a forecast calling for dangerously hot and humid weather through the end of the week.

The protocol will remain in effect through at least 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, as temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s with heat index values topping 100 degrees in parts of the state.

The purpose of the activation is to ensure that vulnerable residents — including seniors, children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions — have access to safe, cool environments. State agencies, municipalities, and partner organizations will coordinate with United Way 2-1-1 to provide real-time information about the availability of cooling centers across Connecticut.

Cooling center locations can be found by calling 2-1-1 or visiting 211ct.org. This marks the second time the protocol has been activated in 2025.

Officials are urging residents to check on neighbors and loved ones who may be especially affected by the extreme heat. State emergency management staff will monitor the situation through the WebEOC system, allowing local and state partners to share critical updates. The state’s energy utility companies will also provide regular updates on service impacts during the heatwave.

According to health officials, anyone can suffer from heat-related illnesses, but the following groups are at highest risk:

  • Infants and young children
  • Older adults (age 65+)
  • People who are overweight
  • Individuals working or exercising outdoors
  • People with heart disease, high blood pressure, or other chronic conditions
  • Those taking medications that affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature

To stay safe during the heat wave, residents are encouraged to:

  • Stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible
  • Avoid direct sunlight and strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Take cool showers or baths
  • Check in regularly with at-risk family and friends
  • Ensure pets have access to water and shade
  • Never leave children or animals inside parked cars

Hydration is also essential. Residents should drink water frequently, even before feeling thirsty, and avoid beverages containing alcohol or high sugar content. Health officials recommend drinking two to four cups of water per hour during outdoor activity.

The state will continue to monitor weather conditions throughout the week and issue additional guidance as needed.
