The New York Mets hosted the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field in Queens, New York. The Mets won the first two games of the series, including Tuesday’s 5-1 victory.
Weston Wilson was back in the lineup at left field after being activated from the 10-day injured list, while the Phillies designated Kody Clemens for assignment after going 0-for-6 for the Phillies to start the season.
David Peterson went 5 ⅓ innings for the Mets, allowing a season-high eight hits, allowing two earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts. Zach Wheeler started for the Phillies and went six innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, two walks, and nine strikeouts.
Brent Baty hit a two-run homer for the Mets for his first homer of the season, as the Mets opened up with a 2-0 lead.
The Phillies tied the game at two in the fourth after RBI singles by Johan Rosas and Trea Turner, and it was that wat until extra innings.
Juan Soto threw out Nick Castellanos at the plate in the eighth inning to prevent the go-ahead run, when he tried to score on a two-out single by Max Kepler.
Francisco Lindor grounded out for the final out of the ninth, with both Luis Torrens and Luisangel Acuna.
Castellanos hit a go-ahead single to left in the tenth, bringing home automatic runner Bryce Harper, who grounded out to end the ninth.
Pete Alonso tied it with a RBI-double and then came home on a walk-off single by Starling Marte, who walked off for the 12th time in his career.
Kyle Schwarber walked in the fifth to tie his longest on-base streak of 31 games, which is the longest in the majors, dating back to last season. Alec Bohm went for three singles, as he extended his hit streak to 10 games, and has hit safely in 11 out of his last 12 games. Bryson Stott snapped his nine-game hit streak, however he did walk in the eighth, when he pinch hit for Edmondo Sosa.
Acuna had extended his on-base streak to 11 games with a plate appearance, when he singled in the ninth. The Mets had swept both the Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals, which makes it the second time in Mets history that they had swept a homestand of seven games or more, as they had a 10-0 sweep from April 13-23, 2015. This was the first time they had won six games or more in a seven-game homestand when they went 6-1 in a seven-game homestand against the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins in Aug. 2019.
The Mets pitching staff have not allowed a home run in 12 straight games, which is the third longest streak in team history, and the longest since they had 14 such games in 1988.
The Mets will take Thursday off before they travel down to the Nation’s capital to face the Washington Nationals for a three-game weekend series. The Phillies will also take a day off as they will travel to Chicago to face the Cubs at Wrigley Field at 2:20 pm on Friday.
