Sutton, Mass. — A police pursuit that began on Route 146 in Sutton ended with a rollover crash at the intersection of Route 12 and Route 20 in Auburn late Tuesday night, prompting a large emergency response from multiple agencies.
According to preliminary information, officers with the Sutton Police Department initiated a pursuit on northbound Route 146 for speeding and failure to maintain lanes. The vehicle continued onto the Massachusetts Turnpike via the Route 20 connector, traveling westbound toward Auburn.
The pursuit exited the Mass Pike at Route 12 in Auburn, where the vehicle continued toward Route 20. After we arrived on scene the destruction path of the vehicle looks to have jumped a curb, rolled over, and came to rest in front of the KFC located at the intersection of Route 12 and Route 20.
Initial reports indicated there may have been multiple occupants inside the vehicle during the pursuit. However, after the crash, one individual who had reportedly been identified as a passenger became the sole occupant located at the scene. That individual allegedly claimed they had been carjacked at knifepoint prior to the pursuit.
Following the crash, Police check surveillance footage from the KFC and a search of the area was conducted. The Auburn Police Department deployed a K-9 unit, Millbury Police Department assisted with drone operations while Massachusetts State Police help search for any potential additional occupants who may have fled the scene.
Police have not confirmed the carjacking claim, and investigators are working to determine exactly who was operating the vehicle during the incident and the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Emergency crews responded to evaluate those involved and secure the area. Traffic in the area was temporarily affected while first responders worked at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation, and additional information is expected to be released by authorities.
