WELLS, Vt. — A report of a motorist allegedly showing signs of impairment behind the wheel led Vermont State Police to a driver stopped on a roadway in Wells and ultimately facing a charge of driving under the influence.
According to Vermont State Police, troopers from the Rutland Barracks responded at approximately 1:14 p.m. on June 1 to a call involving a motor vehicle on Vermont Route 31 in Wells. The report indicated the operator was showing signs of impairment.
When troopers arrived and investigated, authorities determined that Elizabeth Montaufray, 59, of Danby, had been operating the vehicle while showing signs of impairment.
Impaired driving remains one of the most persistent public safety concerns on roadways throughout Vermont and across the country. Unlike many traffic violations that primarily place the driver at risk, impaired driving can endanger everyone sharing the roadway, including other motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Police said the investigation resulted in Montaufray being placed under arrest on a charge of DUI.
Following the arrest, Montaufray was transported to the Castleton Police Department for processing.
Authorities said she was later released with a citation ordering her to appear in Rutland County Superior Court on June 15, 2026, at 10 a.m. to answer to the charge.
The case began with a report from the public regarding a vehicle and an operator allegedly showing signs of impairment. Such reports often play a significant role in helping law enforcement identify potentially dangerous situations before a crash or injury occurs.
Vermont State Police have not released additional information regarding the circumstances that led to the initial call or what specific observations led troopers to conclude the operator was impaired.
The charge remains an allegation, and Elizabeth Montaufray is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
