HOLYOKE, Mass. — Three Springfield men are facing charges after Massachusetts State Police say an attempted traffic stop for speeding on Interstate 91 led to a vehicle pursuit, a crash, the recovery of firearms and a large quantity of marijuana, and a search that ended with the arrest of the driver following a foot chase.

According to Massachusetts State Police, the incident began at approximately 12:22 p.m. on June 1, 2026, when a trooper assigned to the Springfield Barracks attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding on Interstate 91 North in Holyoke.

State Police said the vehicle failed to stop and continued traveling north on Interstate 91 at speeds estimated between 90 and 107 miles per hour. Authorities said the vehicle eventually exited the highway before crashing on the Exit 15A off-ramp.

Investigators reported that the driver then jumped a guardrail and fled the scene on foot. Two passengers who remained at the crash scene were detained by responding troopers.

According to State Police, firearms and a large amount of marijuana were discovered inside the vehicle.

Troopers from the Springfield and Northampton barracks, the Community Action Team, Air Wing and K-9 West joined members of the Holyoke and Easthampton police departments in a search for the fleeing driver.

Authorities said the driver was located in Holyoke and taken into custody at approximately 2:43 p.m. after a brief foot pursuit.

State Police identified one of the passengers as Kevon Crittendon, 24, of Springfield. Crittendon is charged with possession of a large-capacity feeding device and possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug.

The second passenger, identified as De’Shye Brewster, 23, of Springfield, is charged with failure to report a firearms transaction and possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug.

The driver was identified by State Police as Markus Mathieu, 23, of Springfield. Authorities said Mathieu faces multiple charges, including failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violations, speeding and possession with intent to distribute a Class D drug.

The charges are allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains ongoing.
