A woman shot inside a Troy apartment complex has now died, turning what began as a violent assault investigation into a homicide case that is rattling another New York community already exhausted by gun violence.

Police say officers rushed to the Lion Factory Apartments in Lansingburgh around 10:30 p.m. on May 6 after reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 34-year-old Shardonay Tyce suffering from a gunshot wound.

For days, she fought for her life inside a local hospital.

But despite what police described as intensive medical treatment, Tyce died from her injuries on May 11.

Now investigators are working a homicide case.

And the person police believe is responsible is still gone.

Authorities say the shooting reportedly began as a disturbance between the victim and someone she knew — a detail that adds another layer of heartbreak to an already brutal case. Investigators believe this was not random violence exploding out of nowhere, but a deadly confrontation between people connected to one another.

That suspect allegedly fled the scene before officers arrived.

As of Monday, no arrests had been announced.

No suspect has been publicly identified.

No explanation has been released about what triggered the confrontation inside the apartment complex.

And now a family is left grieving while detectives race to track down whoever pulled the trigger.

Police have officially confirmed the investigation is now being handled as a homicide.

The killing has sent another wave of concern through the Capital Region, where residents are once again confronted with the devastating reality of gun violence unfolding inside homes, apartment buildings and neighborhoods where people are supposed to feel safe.

Investigators continue working to piece together the final moments leading up to the shooting inside the Lion Factory Apartments.

Authorities have not released additional information about possible witnesses, surveillance footage, or whether investigators believe the suspect remains in the area.

For now, the case remains open, a suspected killer remains unidentified publicly, and another New York family is preparing for a funeral instead of a recovery.
