Franklin — A former Franklin resident has been charged in connection with a house fire that caused extensive damage and claimed the lives of two pets late last year, officials announced.

According to the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office, 48-year-old Melissa Brown was arrested with assistance from the State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and charged with arson of a dwelling.

The charges stem from a November 1, 2025 fire at 338 Maple Street.

The fire was first reported at approximately 5:45 p.m., when neighbors noticed smoke and flames coming from the single-family home.

When crews from the Franklin Fire Department arrived, they were met with heavy fire showing from the front and left side of the structure. The blaze rapidly spread from the first floor to the second floor, prompting a second alarm response.

Firefighters were able to bring the bulk of the fire under control, but remained on scene for several hours working through hotspots and overhaul operations.

One occupant of the home — identified as Brown — was able to escape safely and declined medical treatment.

However, officials confirmed that two cats were found deceased inside the home.

No other injuries were reported.

Officials say the arrest follows a thorough and methodical investigation conducted by the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit.

The investigation was supported by:

  • Franklin Fire Department
  • Franklin Police Department
  • State Police Crime Lab

Based on evidence developed during the investigation, authorities established probable cause to charge Brown with arson.

Due to the scale of the fire, several surrounding departments responded under mutual aid, including:

  • Milford
  • Medway
  • Bellingham
  • Wrentham
  • Foxborough
  • Plainville
  • Norfolk

Brown now faces prosecution in connection with the incident. Officials have not released additional details about a possible motive.

The case remains under review as it moves through the court system.
