PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A Dighton, Massachusetts man is headed to state prison after a drunken, wrong-way highway rampage left six people hospitalized and four seriously injured, prosecutors said.
On Jan. 15, 2026, Providence County Superior Court Justice David Cruise sentenced Cary Guy, 33, to 17 years, with 10 years to serve at the Adult Correctional Institutions and seven years suspended with probation. Guy must also complete alcohol counseling and treatment and will lose his driver’s license for six years after his release.
Guy pleaded nolo contendere to four counts of driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, four counts of driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, and two counts of driving to endanger resulting in physical injury.
“Driving under the influence is a crime that is as reckless as it is entirely avoidable,” said Attorney General Peter Neronha. “When this defendant drove drunk, he endangered the lives of everyone on the road that evening, including the six victims that he sent to the hospital for serious injuries. There is no excuse for this type of behavior, and my Office will continue to hold accountable those who threaten the lives of others by driving impaired.”
Prosecutors said the evidence showed Guy drove the wrong way on Route 195 East in East Providence and triggered a violent chain of collisions that sent victims scrambling for their lives.
On May 24, 2022, at about 7:25 p.m., Guy drove his vehicle in the wrong direction on Route 195 East and slammed head-on into multiple vehicles. Minutes later, East Providence and Rehoboth police alerted Rhode Island State Police to the crash.
Troopers and first responders found devastation on the roadway. Guy was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries. At the hospital, law enforcement attempted to conduct a field sobriety test and requested a chemical blood test, which Guy refused. Investigators obtained a search warrant for his blood. Testing revealed a blood alcohol content of .109.
A crash reconstruction later determined Guy was traveling at 88 miles per hour just before impact.
Six victims suffered serious injuries. Five were transported to Rhode Island Hospital, and a sixth was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital.
