Police have arrested a 13-year-old in connection with the shooting death of 15-year-old Kaiden Phillips in New Haven. Phillips was killed on September 27 after officers responded around 7:45 p.m. to the area of Bassett Street and Butler Street and found him unresponsive at Lincoln Bassett Community School. He was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from previous fights. The teenage suspect was arrested at a New Haven home on Friday and charged with murder. Police said video evidence, as well as tips and information from the community, helped lead to the arrest.
New Haven Police Chief and Mayor Justin Elicker held a news conference at 2 p.m. to discuss the arrest. The police chief said the case will proceed in juvenile court. Officials noted that the warrant is sealed, and further details cannot be released at this time.
