WORCESTER — Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred in Worcester on Friday, August 22, 2025, according to District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr.
In the morning, members of the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section (VFAS), the United States Marshals Service, and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office were executing a Superior Court arrest warrant in the area of Strathmore Road. The target of the warrant, identified as Chris Betances, 23, of Worcester, attempted to flee in a vehicle and drive toward officers. A Deputy U.S. Marshal on scene, in concern for his safety, shot and wounded Betances. Officers immediately rendered aid and transported him to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Betances was arraigned in Worcester Superior Court on the outstanding warrant and held without bail. He is in custody and is scheduled to return to court on August 29, 2025. The incident remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services, State Police Firearms Identification Section, State Police Cyber Crimes Unit, State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section (CARS), VFAS, Troopers from Troop C, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Worcester Police Department.
