WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Connecticut Sun finally broke through on the road, defeating the Washington Mystics 80-69 on Tuesday night at CareFirst Arena, ending a 13-game road losing streak and sending a clear signal that the team’s young roster is capable of competing in stretches despite a challenging season.

The Sun, now 7-27 on the season, overcame an early deficit behind strong performances from their core and a dominant showing from the bench. Saniya Rivers led all scorers with 17 points and four rebounds, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Veteran Tina Charles contributed 13 points and nine boards. Rookie Leila Lacan continued her standout season defensively, registering four steals, five assists and eight points. Lacan has now recorded three games this season with four or more steals, making her the only rookie in the league to reach that milestone.

Washington jumped out to a 13-5 lead to start the game, shooting 75 percent from the floor, while the Sun struggled to find rhythm offensively. Connecticut responded with a 16-10 run to close the first quarter and began asserting itself in the second, building a 47-35 halftime lead following a flurry of steals and fast-break points. Out of the break, the Sun extended the lead to double digits, and despite a late push from the Mystics, Connecticut’s depth and defensive intensity proved decisive.

The Sun bench outscored Washington’s reserves 45-11, a new season high, highlighting the team’s improving rotation balance. Connecticut also gained an edge in fast break points (10-6) and points in the paint (40-38), reflecting the team’s ability to convert turnovers into high-quality scoring opportunities. The Sun shot 45.6 percent from the field overall, compared to 43.5 percent for Washington.

For the Mystics, Sonia Citron led with 19 points and three assists, Shakira Austin added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Jade Melbourne finished with 11 points and four assists. Kiki Iriafen and Sug Sutton led in rebounding and playmaking with 12 boards and seven assists, respectively, but the Mystics could not overcome the Sun’s bench surge and defensive pressure.

The victory has meaningful implications for Connecticut as the season enters its final stretch. While playoff contention remains out of reach, snapping a long road losing streak can serve as a confidence boost for a young roster and a chance to evaluate the development of key players in meaningful minutes. Rivers’ scoring consistency, Nelson-Ododa’s near double-double, and Lacan’s defensive impact highlight the team’s growing depth and potential for next season.

Head coach Stephanie White noted after the game that the win was about more than just the scoreboard. “It’s about building belief,” White said. “Our players showed resilience and energy tonight. These are the kinds of performances we need to finish the season strong and carry momentum into next year.”

Connecticut will face Washington once more this season on Thursday, August 21, for their final meeting. A second victory would not only sweep the season series but also reinforce the team’s ability to execute both offensively and defensively on the road—a trend the Sun will hope to continue as they look to close out a rebuilding year with growing confidence and experience.
