Ingredients
For Salisbury Steak:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter (for frying)
For the Gravy:
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp cold water (slurry)
- Salt and pepper to taste
For Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet)
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup milk (warm)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: 1/4 cup sour cream or cream cheese for extra creaminess
Instructions
1. Prepare the Salisbury Steak Patties:
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently until combined; avoid overmixing to keep patties tender.
- Shape into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
2. Cook the Patties:
- Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through (internal temp 160°F).
- Remove patties and set aside.
3. Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Stir, scraping up browned bits from the pan.
- Bring to a simmer.
- Stir in the cornstarch slurry slowly and cook until gravy thickens, about 2–3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
4. Combine and Simmer:
- Return the patties to the skillet with the gravy.
- Simmer on low for 5 minutes to let flavors meld and patties stay juicy.
5. Prepare Mashed Potatoes:
- Peel and cut potatoes into chunks.
- Boil in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes.
- Drain and return to pot.
- Add butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.
- Optional: Fold in sour cream or cream cheese for richness.
Serve
Plate the Salisbury steaks with a generous spoonful of gravy over the top alongside creamy mashed potatoes. A side of steamed green beans or carrots pairs well to complete the meal.
