On Wednesday morning, Vice President JD Vance welcomed Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and his wife, Mary O’Shea, for a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast at the Vice President’s Residence in Washington, DC.
The event, which began at 8:26 a.m., featured warm greetings and friendly banter, with Vance humorously indulging a photographer by shaking Martin’s hand a second time for the camera.
During his welcoming remarks around 8:40 a.m., Vice President Vance shared anecdotes from a trip to Ireland and joked about his wife finally being able to wear her long-stored green slacks. He also showcased his shamrock socks, suggesting they were a diplomatic gesture, despite knowing that President Trump favors a more conservative fashion style.
Taoiseach Martin addressed the attendees for six minutes, expressing appreciation for the Vances’ hospitality and underscoring the importance of the U.S.-Ireland relationship. He highlighted the need for peace in U.S. foreign policy, especially relating to Ukraine.
The breakfast menu delighted guests with fresh berries, poached eggs Benedict, roasted potato cakes, cured ham, avocados, and a variety of breads, including Irish soda bread and pepper scones. Attendees included notable figures such as Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Senators Tim Sheehy and Susan Collins.
Following the breakfast, Martin is scheduled to meet President Trump at the White House at 10:45 a.m. This meeting is expected to cover various topics, particularly the economic ties between the two nations. Ireland exported approximately $78 billion worth of goods to the U.S. last year, while importing only $22 billion, resulting in one of the largest trade surpluses worldwide. Moreover, Ireland has attracted many American companies due to its low corporate tax rate of 12.5%.
In addition to trade discussions, the leaders likely will address issues concerning undocumented Irish citizens in the U.S. and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Ireland has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza and has supported international efforts to address humanitarian crises in the region.
After their meeting in the Oval Office, Martin and Trump were set to attend the Friends of Ireland Luncheon at the U.S. Capitol at around 12:05 p.m., followed by the traditional Shamrock Reception at the White House later in the day, which has been celebrated since President Eisenhower’s time in 1953. With an expected attendance of hundreds, this event honors the deep ties between the U.S. and Ireland, a bond shared by around 70 million people of Irish descent worldwide.
Micheál Martin, originally from Cork, has had a distinguished political career. He recently returned to the role of Taoiseach, having previously served from 2020 to 2022, and is part of a political swap with Fine Gael, which has Leo Varadkar as its current Taoiseach. Varadkar was notably the last Irish leader to visit the White House for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations just a year prior.
