In Springfield, Massachusetts, two men were arrested with loaded firearms after a shot spotter activation in the 400 block of Union Street.
Rashae McKinney, 21, of Springfield and Brian Grant, also a 21-year-old and resident of Springfield, were both arrested by the Springfield Police Department early Tuesday morning just before 3:00 AM.
Springfield Police said, “At approximately 1:55 a.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Union Street for a ShotSpotter activation. Officers, who were already in the area, arrived and observed three subjects near the intersection of Union Street and Walnut Street. Officers stopped to speak to the group and observed a firearm coming out of one subject’s hoodie pocket.” That subject SPD said was identified as Rashae McKinney.
As officers went to detain McKinney, SPD says, “He attempted to run away but was quickly secured.”
Officers recovered from McKinney a Ghost Gun loaded with 9 rounds of ammunition and capable of holding 17 rounds.
McKinney was also wearing a fanny pack, and SPD said, “Inside his fanny pack, officers recovered additional loose ammunition.”
Brian Grant, SPD said, “Also began to run away. As he ran, he was holding his waistband. Officers took him into custody on the 400 block of State Street.”
When SPD officers took Grant into custody, SPD said, “Officers recovered a loaded firearm from Grant which was previously reported stolen out of Springfield.”
Grant was also wearing a fanny pack, and SPD said, “Inside Grant’s fanny pack officers recovered oxycodone, clonazepam and dextroamphetamine.”
McKinney was charged with Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card.
Grant was charged with Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Resisting Arrest, Possession of a Class B Drug, Possession of a Class E Drug, and Receiving Stolen Property Less than $1200.
Both McKinney and Grant were arraigned in Springfield District Court on Tuesday before Judge Danielle L Williams, who entered a plea of not guilty on all charges for both McKinney and Grant.
McKinney was held Tuesday pending a dangerousness hearing on Wednesday, and at that dangerousness hearing Wednesday before Judge William E Rooney, McKinney was ordered if released to wear electronic monitoring (GPS), undergo an evaluation for mental health or substance abuse, comply with curfew, stay employed, comply with court ordered treatment plans. McKinney was held without bail ordered and committed to the Hampden County House of Correction.
Grant, also was held pending a dangerousness hearing on Wednesday before Judge William E Rooney who ordered Grant to wear electronic monitoring (GPS), comply with a curfew, undergo an evaluation for mental health or substance abuse, and stay employed. Grant was ordered committed to the Hampden County House of Correction.
Grant was back in Springfield District Court on Thursday before Judge Michele Ouimet-Rooke, who imposed additional court ordered sanctions, including court ordered treatment plans, and to surrender firearm/FID/License to carry.
Springfield said a third individual was identified and released.
SPD Officers did locate a shell casing on the 400 block of Union Street where the initial ShotSpotter activation occurred.
