In Midtown Manhattan, between 40th and 42nd Streets on Eighth Avenue, Port Authority Bus Terminal is the worlds busiest bus terminal and our country’s largest bus terminal, serving more than 8,000 buses and about 225,000 people on an average weekday.
In the early morning hours on April 22, 2024, a 65-year-old carpenter traveling to work was sitting on a bench in Port Authority reading while he waited for his coworker.
While he sat and read, someone came up behind him, and unprovoked, stabbed him nine times in the throat, neck, back, and arm.
Nearby Port Authority Police Officers Jordan Eugenis and Antonio Peterson heard screaming, ran over to the scene, and observed Michael McCloskey, 42, of Watsonville, California standing over the carpenter while holding a knife. McCloskey was taken into custody, and the carpenter was taken to Bellevue Hospital to be treated.
The carpenter suffered from several lacerations, puncture wounds, and substantial pain. He received approximately 47 stitches and had to stay overnight for additional treatment and testing.
On September 12, 2024, McCloskey pleaded guilty to one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and on October 17, McCloskey was sentenced to 13 years in state prison.
