A mother of two from Lawrence, Massachusetts who was reported missing on August 31, was found deceased on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

The Essex County District Attorney’s office says that the body of Carol Flaz-Burgos, 37, of Lawrence was found by a Massachusetts State Police trooper accompanied by a K-9 and Airwing unit near Kenoza Lake in Haverhill.

Cristian Montero, 35, of Lawrence, who the DA’s office says lived in the same building as Flaz-Burgos, was arrested Tuesday by Lawrence Police.

Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker on the arrest of Montero has only said, “At this time, we have a suspect in custody on a charge of witness intimidation and misleading an investigation.” Tucker did add, “When the medical examiner’s office completes their autopsy, which may occur in the next 24 to 48 hours, we expect that charge will be upgraded to murder.”

Montero was arraigned on Wednesday in Lawrence District Court and appeared before Judge Carol-Ann Fraser, who entered a not-guilty plea on the charge of intimidating witness/juror/police/court official. Judge Fraser granted the District Attorney’s motion based on dangerousness for order of pre-trial detention, and ordered Montero committed to the Essex County House of Correction pending a dangerousness hearing on September 11.
