On Tuesday in New Haven, Connecticut at the New Haven Superior Court, Judge Elpedio N. Vitale sentenced Kiyon Matheney, 26, of New Haven to 33 years in prison.

On October 6, Matheney was found guilty by a jury of Manslaughter in the First Degree with a Firearm, Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit, and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.

New Haven Police investigated the fatal shooting of John Tubac-Saquil shortly after 11 p.m. on July 3, 2022, in the area of Poplar Street between Pine Street and Chatham Street, and determined through their investigation that Matheney approached Tubac-Saquil’s truck where Tubac-Saquil was talking to his girlfriend, and shot him. 

John Tubac-Saquil, a recent high school graduate at High School in the Community, had a passion for music, he played the saxophone, and at 17-years-old he planned to start college in the fall of 2022, but instead, John Tubac-Saquil died four days later on Thursday, July 7, 2022. 

An arrest warrant was secured on October 17, 2022, for Matheney and he was arrested two days later.

At sentencing on Tuesday, several teachers and instructors, as well as Tubac-Saquil’s family, addressed the court.
