The Providence Friars after placing fifth in the Big East Tournament would be granted an 11th seed during Selection Sunday this past week and would be matched up versus the six seed Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats earned the sixth seed after placing third in the SouthEastern Conference Tournament.
This matchup would be part of the East portion of the bracket with the winner of this matchup going on to the round of 32 to face the winner of number three Kansas St and number 14 Montana St.
Providence and Kentucky would trade buckets and compete in a close game for the first 13 minutes of the game with multiple lead changes. Providence would stick around a little longer but Providence would have their last lead at the eight minute 40 second mark in the first half. Kentucky would stay in control the rest of the game.
The Wildcats would be leading at halftime 38-31 and would keep the Friars at a distance never letting them get within four points.
Providence would go on to lose 61-53 as Kentucky would end their dance in the March Madness tournament.
The Friars would see 16 points from Ed Crosswell and 10 points from Devin Carter.
The Wildcats will move on to the round of 32 behind performances by Antonio Reeves with 22 points and Jacob Toppin with 18 points.
