New England Sports Notebook – Patriots Beat By A Field Goal And Minor League Baseball

Thursday night, preseason football was back at Gillette Stadium with the New England Patriots hosting the New York Giants. In the first quarter with 9:39 on the clock Gano made a 25 yard field goal to get the Giants into this game 3-0. It was looking as if the Patriots wouldn’t get on the board in the first quarter but with three seconds remaining on the clock, Hoyer passed short right to Thornton who took it 2 yards to get the touchdown. The extra point was good to put the Patriots on top 3-7. In the second quarter, with 3:58 on the clock Taylor passed short middle to James to bring it 7 yards to get the touchdown for the Giants. Gano’s extra point was good to put the Giants on top 10-7. In the third quarter, with eleven minutes on the clock Harris got the touchdown for the Patriots..Vizcaino’s extra point was good for the Patriots to take a 10-14 lead. But down to 6:59 on the clock, Williams took it up the middle for 2 yards, to get the Giants a touchdown. Gano’s extra point was good to make this a 17-14 Giants game. In the fourth quarter, with 10:26 on the clock, Gano made a 40 yard field goal to put the Giants on top 20-14. With 4:56 on the clock Zappe passed deep right to Humphrey to get a touchdown. Vizcaino’s  extra point was good for the Patriots to make it a 20-21 game. But a 24 yard field goal by Gano with three seconds remaining in the game would get the Giants a preseason game one, 23-21 win. The Patriots had 308 net yards, made 59 offensive plays, had 19 first downs and had one turnover. 

The Worcester Red Sox, Thursday night, were seeking to bounce back after dropping three straight but they instead found themselves losing 1-4, to drop their fourth straight since Sunday afternoon. At the top of the seventh, Abraham Almonte got the solo run for Worcester, his 15th homer of the season. Bottom of the second, is when the RailRiders dominated this game with a hit parade to get four runs in. 

The Hartford Yard Goats, after losing five straight, secured a 4-2 win Thursday against the Somerset Patriots. Top of the second Daniel Cope hit a single to help drive in Daniel Montano and put the Yard Goats on top 1-0. Top of the fourth, Aaron Schunk made it over the plate to put the Yard Goats on top 2-0. But at the bottom of the sixth, Max Burt hit his tenth homer of the season to drive in Eric Wagaman to make this a 2-2 game. Top of the seventh, the Yard Goats found themselves back in the lead with Tyler Hill scoring to make this a 3-2 Yard Goats lead. Top of the ninth, this game ended the way it started, with Daniel Cope hitting a single to help drive in Daniel Montano and making this a 4-2 win for the Yard Goats.

Up North, in Portland, Maine the Sea Dogs sealed their third straight win, 6-5 against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. In Manchester, New Hampshire the Fisher Cats dropped their fourth straight since Sunday, losing 1-5 against the Erie SeaWolves.
