The Manchester Fisher Cats went into their Wednesday night contest against the Fighting Phils looking to bounce back from the 6-0 shutout loss in the first game of a six-game series Tuesday night.
After a scoreless first inning, Wendell Rijo hit a three-run home run to give Reading a 3-0 lead early. The bats were strong with the Fighting Phils in tonight’s contest as all of their runs came off of home runs. That seemed to have been the only strong thing for them, however, as they went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jonathan Guzman hit his third home run of the season to extend Reading’s lead to 4-0. Rijo then came back and hit his second three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, making the score 7-0.
Manchester went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, and that proved to be their downfall as they suffered their second consecutive shutout in the hands of the Fighting Phils. Starting pitcher Hayden Juenger fell to 0-5 on the year, pitching just three innings, giving up three hits, three runs and only striking out one batter.
Sean Rackoski also gave up three runs on three hits, but he only pitched two innings. He also struck out two batters.
These two teams will meet for the third consecutive night tomorrow night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, PA. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
