On Thursday Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Washington. During their meeting they discussed the United States’ support for Ukraine’s military in the face of Russia’s renewed offensive in the Donbas.
They also discussed the ongoing provision of defensive security assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including an additional $800 million package announced by President Biden on Thursday.
The Pentagon announced on Thursday that the United States has now committed more than $4 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the beginning of the Biden Administration, including approximately $3.4 billion since the beginning of Russia’s unprovoked invasion on February 24.
During Thursday’s meeting Secretary Austin commended the bravery of the Ukrainian people and reaffirmed that the United States will continue to utilize all available tools to support Ukraine’s Armed Forces in the face of Russian aggression.
