BOSTON — Three Gold Gloves for the Boston Red Sox. A dramatic second-half comeback by the New England Patriots. Another road victory for the Boston Celtics. An overtime thriller for the Bruins. And across the country, a weekend of stunning NFL results, college football upsets and remarkable individual performances.
The opening weekend of November delivered nearly everything sports fans could ask for.
Boston’s biggest headline came Sunday night when three Red Sox players were recognized among baseball’s elite defenders. Hours earlier, the Patriots had erased a double-digit halftime deficit in Miami, while the Celtics added another victory in Orlando.
But beyond New England, the weekend brought an upset of the nation’s second-ranked college football team, multiple overtime finishes in the NFL and several dominant performances that reshaped the national sports conversation.
Red Sox Make History With Three Gold Glove Winners
The Boston Red Sox made franchise history Sunday night when Wilyer Abreu, Caleb Durbin and Ceddanne Rafaela were named recipients of the 2026 American League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.
Abreu captured the award in right field, Durbin won at third base, and Rafaela earned the honor in center field.
It marked just the fifth time in franchise history that three Red Sox players received Gold Glove Awards in the same season and the first since 2018, when Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Ian Kinsler were honored.
The accomplishment also continued an impressive stretch of defensive excellence for Boston.
Abreu earned his third consecutive Gold Glove, becoming just the sixth Red Sox player to win the award in three straight seasons.
The 27-year-old led Major League right fielders with 28 defensive runs saved, 13 assists, 153 starts and 1,357 innings played.
His 28 defensive runs saved were the most by any player at any position in Major League Baseball.
Abreu also ranked in MLB’s 98th percentile in arm strength, averaging 95.3 mph.
Rafaela, 26, captured his second consecutive Gold Glove after leading Major League center fielders with 21 defensive runs saved.
He also led American League center fielders with eight assists, 16 outs above average and a fielding run value of 16.
Durbin, 26, earned his first career Gold Glove after leading American League third basemen with 13 defensive runs saved, seven outs above average and a fielding run value of six.
He also led all Major League third basemen with 31 double plays and 282 assists.
Durbin became the first Red Sox infielder to win a Gold Glove since Kinsler in 2018 and just the second Boston third baseman to receive the honor, joining Frank Malzone.
Since the award’s creation in 1957, 26 different Red Sox players have combined to win 55 Gold Gloves.
The three winners are also eligible for consideration for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award, with fan voting continuing through Thursday, November 5.
Patriots Erase Double-Digit Deficit to Defeat Miami
The New England Patriots faced a 13-3 halftime deficit Sunday afternoon against the Miami Dolphins.
Their offense had struggled to finish drives, the weather presented difficult conditions, and the Dolphins appeared positioned to deliver an AFC East upset.
Then Drake Maye took over.
The Patriots quarterback threw two long touchdown passes and added a rushing touchdown as New England stormed back to defeat Miami 24-19.
The victory extended the Patriots’ winning streak over the Dolphins to three games and improved New England’s record against AFC East opponents to 3-0.
Maye connected with Kyle Williams on a 43-yard touchdown pass during the third quarter, producing the explosive play New England desperately needed.
He later found DeMario Douglas for a 48-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The two scoring passes marked the first time the Patriots had recorded multiple touchdown receptions of at least 40 yards in the same game since September 24, 2017.
Maye has now thrown 14 touchdown passes of at least 30 yards over the last two seasons, the most in the NFL during that span, according to the Patriots’ team notes.
He also became one of only three Patriots quarterbacks to throw multiple touchdown passes of at least 30 yards in consecutive games, joining Tom Brady and Mike Taliaferro.
Maye has thrown at least two touchdown passes in five consecutive games and has accounted for three touchdowns in each of his last two contests.
The Patriots also celebrated a major milestone for running back Rhamondre Stevenson.
Stevenson rushed for 82 yards and surpassed 4,000 career rushing yards, becoming only the fourth player in franchise history to reach that mark.
He finished the afternoon with 4,036 career rushing yards, joining Sam Cunningham, Jim Nance and Tony Collins.
Defensively, Kevin Byard III recorded his first interception of the season, while Cory Durden registered the first sacks of his NFL career.
Jaylen Reed also recorded his first career sack.
The Patriots’ second-half response was especially significant because they had not overcome a double-digit deficit since their December 21, 2025, victory over Baltimore.
New England now enters the next stretch of the season with momentum, a perfect divisional record and a quarterback continuing to deliver explosive plays when his team needs them most.
