GREENE, N.Y. — A 34-year-old survey worker is in critical condition after New York State Police said he was struck by a pickup truck while conducting testing inside a closed portion of an active work zone Friday afternoon.
The crash happened at approximately 2:52 p.m. Aug. 14 on State Route 206 in the town of Greene.
New York State Police from SP Norwich responded to the scene after receiving a report of a crash involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian.
A preliminary investigation determined that a 2023 Ford Ranger was traveling westbound on State Route 206 through a posted active work zone.
Police identified the driver as Kenneth J. Alberts, 59, of McGraw.
Investigators said Alberts failed to maintain his lane of travel and struck survey worker Jeffrey Michael Hall, 34, of Monticello.
Hall was conducting testing outside of his vehicle on a closed portion of the roadway when he was struck.
The impact knocked Hall into an open door of his vehicle.
Hall suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to SUNY Upstate Medical University.
He was listed in critical condition.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to assist with the investigation.
Police said Alberts immediately called 911 following the crash and has been cooperative with investigators.
He was issued traffic citations.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Following the crash, New York State Police reminded motorists to use extra caution when driving through active work zones, including slowing down, obeying posted speed limits and remaining alert for workers, equipment, changing traffic patterns and sudden stops.
Police also urged motorists to move over when a lane is available and it can be done safely to help protect workers performing roadway improvements.
