BOSTON — A fight inside one of Boston’s busiest transportation hubs turned deadly Wednesday evening when a man was stabbed on an escalator at South Station, sending police flooding into the station and temporarily disrupting Red Line service.

The violence erupted just after 5:30 p.m. inside the MBTA’s Red Line station at South Station.

Boston Police Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said investigators believe the victim and a male suspect became involved in an altercation inside the station.

That confrontation moved onto an escalator leading out of South Station.

Then came the stabbing.

Police said the victim suffered at least one stab wound during the fight.

Boston EMS transported one person from South Station to a nearby hospital. The victim was later pronounced dead.

No suspect was in custody Wednesday night.

The killing triggered a major police response inside the downtown transportation hub as investigators began working to determine exactly what happened and identify the person responsible.

An entrance to South Station was taped off as the investigation unfolded. The escalator where the violence occurred was also blocked off, with blood visible at the scene.

The police activity also disrupted one of Boston’s busiest subway lines.

Red Line trains temporarily bypassed South Station because of the investigation before service resumed.

South Station is a major transportation hub in the Northeast, handling nearly 42,000 commuter rail riders each day. Wednesday’s stabbing brought deadly violence directly into a station used by thousands of people moving through Boston every day.

Investigators are now looking for witnesses who may have seen the confrontation or have information that could help identify the suspect.

Boston police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 617-343-4470. Information can also be provided anonymously by calling 1-800-494-TIPS or texting “TIP” to 27463.

The investigation remains ongoing.
