WASHINGTON — The Department of War announced a series of major military developments Monday, including a historic Marine Corps transit through the Panama Canal, new agreements aimed at significantly increasing missile interceptor production, and multiple senior military leadership nominations made by President Donald Trump.
The announcements highlight ongoing efforts to strengthen military readiness, modernize the defense industrial base and fill key leadership positions across the armed services.
Marine Expeditionary Unit Transits Panama Canal
The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, operating as Littoral Combat Force 24, transited the Panama Canal aboard the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio on Aug. 1.
According to the Department of War, it marks the first time a Marine expeditionary unit has navigated the Panama Canal since 2008.
Officials said the operation demonstrated the Marine Corps’ ability to rapidly deploy forces worldwide, maneuver through narrow waterways and project combat power ashore without relying on established military bases. The transit also showcased close integration between the Navy and Marine Corps while reinforcing the military’s ability to respond quickly throughout the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility, including Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
The Department said the Panama Canal remains a critical strategic route that allows U.S. naval forces to move quickly between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, reducing transit times and increasing operational flexibility during humanitarian missions, regional security operations and potential military contingencies.
Department Announces Missile Production Expansion
The Department of War also announced new framework agreements with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin designed to expand production capacity for key missile defense systems.
According to the department, the agreements are intended to increase production of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense components by strengthening the supply chain and providing long-term production stability for manufacturers.
Officials said the initiative supports efforts to expand the nation’s integrated air and missile defense capabilities while increasing manufacturing capacity through investments in tooling, facilities and workforce development.
The agreements also establish a second source for Solid Rocket Motors used in the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement program and increase production of ignition safety devices. In addition, officials said production of structural components for THAAD interceptors, including mid-body shells, muzzle covers and rail car assemblies, is expected to increase significantly.
Military Leadership Nominations Announced
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also announced several military leadership nominations made by President Donald Trump.
Army Lt. Gen. Edmond M. Brown has been nominated for assignment as deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command in Austin, Texas.
Army Lt. Gen. Francisco J. Lozano has been nominated to serve as portfolio acquisition executive fires and director of the Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Charles S. Corcoran has been nominated to become commander and president of Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.
Space Force Maj. Gen. Robert J. Hutt has been nominated for assignment as senior military assistant to the Deputy Secretary of War at the Pentagon.
Army Maj. Gen. Christopher R. Norrie has been nominated to serve as commanding general of III Corps and Fort Hood, Texas.
Space Force Maj. Gen. Christopher S. Povak has been nominated as deputy chief of space operations for Operations at U.S. Space Force headquarters.
In a separate announcement, Hegseth said President Trump has nominated Navy Rear Adm. (lower half) John D. Saccomando for promotion to rear admiral with assignment as chief of Navy Reserve and commander of Navy Reserve Forces at the Pentagon.
