By Tiffany Williams –

Police are searching for a prisoner who escaped from custody Friday afternoon after fleeing from a hospital in the Bronx, prompting an ongoing search by New York City police.
According to police, the 42-year-old man escaped from inside BronxCare Hospital, located at 1650 Grand Concourse, at approximately 2:10 p.m. Friday.
Police said the man had been taken to the hospital after being arrested earlier Friday in connection with a petit larceny case stemming from an April incident in which he allegedly stole sneakers from a store.
Authorities said the prisoner fled from the hospital and was last seen wearing black sweatpants and a white hospital gown. Police said he ran off in an unknown direction.
The man was originally arrested for petit larceny within the confines of the NYPD’s 40th Precinct, according to police.
Investigators said the escaped prisoner has more than 20 prior arrests, including arrests for burglary, petit larceny and drug-related offenses.
The circumstances surrounding why the prisoner was transported to the hospital have not been released.
As of Friday evening, the prisoner remained at large and police continued searching for him. Authorities have not announced any additional arrests or provided further details about the ongoing search.
