Connecticut Sun center Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, according to court documents filed Thursday in Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia.

The filing comes about seven years after the couple married and two years after welcoming their son, Bash Raymond Griner.

According to the court documents, the couple has been separated since July 24, 2026. Brittney Griner describes the marriage as “irretrievably broken.”

The filing states that Brittney Griner is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s two-year-old son. She is also requesting “an equitable division of all marital assets” and states that she “should be awarded her separate, nonmarital property, including but not limited to inherited property as well as premarital property.”

The court filing also requests that child support be awarded and determined in accordance with Georgia’s Child Support Guidelines.

Brittney Griner, 35, and Cherelle Griner, 33, met while they were students at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Cherelle Griner became widely known during Brittney Griner’s detention in Russia after the WNBA star was arrested in February 2022 when vape cartridges containing cannabis oil were found in her luggage. Throughout Brittney Griner’s imprisonment, Cherelle Griner publicly advocated for her wife’s release and repeatedly urged U.S. government officials to secure her return.

After returning to the United States in late 2022, Brittney Griner publicly thanked then-President Joe Biden for his efforts to bring her home.

If finalized, this would be Brittney Griner’s second divorce. She previously married former WNBA player Glory Johnson in May 2015. The marriage ended after Brittney Griner filed for divorce, and the divorce was finalized in June 2016.

The divorce case involving Brittney Griner and Cherelle Griner is now pending before the Fulton County Superior Court.
