BERLIN, Mass. — A deadly shooting in broad daylight at a busy shopping plaza in Berlin ended with two people dead Tuesday after authorities tracked the alleged gunman more than 40 miles away and found him with what investigators say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The violence unfolded shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday when the Berlin Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at the Shops at Highland Commons. Officers and emergency personnel rushed to the shopping center and found an injured person suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite an immediate response from multiple police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel, the victim could not be saved.
Emergency responders, including Berlin Police Department, Hudson Police Department, Berlin Fire Department and EMS, Bolton Fire Department, and Boylston Fire Department rendered aid, but the victim was declared deceased at the scene.
The shooting shattered what had been a normal afternoon at one of the area’s busiest commercial centers, transforming the shopping plaza into an active homicide investigation within minutes. Police quickly secured the area while investigators began collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine exactly what happened before the gunfire erupted.
Authorities say the case took another dramatic turn almost immediately after the shooting.
Rather than disappearing without a trace, the alleged suspect was reportedly followed by a witness who left the shopping plaza and continued observing the suspect’s movements after the shooting. That witness remained engaged and contacted Massachusetts State Police while following the suspect’s vehicle onto Interstate 495 North.
According to investigators, that real-time information proved critical.
After the shooting, a witness from the scene followed the alleged suspect onto I-495 N, and subsequently called Mass. State Police, who were then able to locate and successfully stop the suspect’s vehicle at mile marker 91 in Lowell, near the Lowell connector.
The pursuit did not end in a public confrontation or lengthy chase. Instead, state police located the vehicle and brought it to a stop in Lowell, where investigators say they discovered another deadly scene.
Based on preliminary investigations, it appears the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was subsequently pronounced deceased.
The suspect was pronounced dead after authorities reached the vehicle, bringing an end to an investigation that had rapidly expanded from Worcester County into Middlesex County.
The developments meant investigators were forced to process two major crime scenes connected by dozens of miles — the original homicide scene in Berlin and the vehicle stop in Lowell.
Specialized Massachusetts State Police units were quickly mobilized as investigators worked to secure evidence and document every aspect of the incident.
The Mass State Police Crisis Negotiations Team, State Police Department of Field Services, and Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene.
Their response reflected the rapidly evolving nature of the investigation as authorities worked to safely resolve the incident while preserving evidence that could help explain what led to the deadly shooting.
Back at the shopping plaza, investigators continued combing through the crime scene as emergency vehicles, police cruisers, and investigators filled the commercial area.
Authorities have not publicly identified either the victim or the alleged suspect, and investigators have not released any information regarding a possible motive or the relationship, if any, between the two individuals.
Officials also have not disclosed what events immediately preceded the shooting or whether any additional witnesses observed the gunfire.
What investigators have emphasized, however, is that there is no ongoing danger to surrounding communities.
There is no threat to the public at this time.
While that announcement brought reassurance to residents and businesses in Berlin and neighboring communities, investigators stressed that the criminal investigation itself is only beginning.
The investigation now spans multiple jurisdictions and involves numerous specialized investigative units responsible for forensic evidence, firearms examination, collision reconstruction, and death investigations.
The investigation is in its early stages and will continue ongoing in the coming days by the Berlin Police Department, Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Mass. State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, State Police Crime Scene Services (CSS), State Police Crash Reconstruction Section (CARS), State Police Firearms Identification Section (FIS), and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The involvement of multiple State Police investigative divisions reflects the complexity of documenting every aspect of the case. Detectives will continue reviewing physical evidence, witness statements, forensic findings, and investigative leads as they work to reconstruct the timeline leading up to the shooting and the events that followed on Interstate 495.
Investigators are expected to determine precisely how the shooting unfolded inside or near the shopping plaza, establish the movements of both individuals after the gunfire, examine the vehicle involved in the interstate stop, and analyze all available forensic evidence.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will ultimately determine the official causes and manners of death for both individuals.
For residents who witnessed the emergency response Tuesday afternoon, the shocking violence transformed an ordinary shopping trip into the scene of an active homicide investigation that stretched across two Massachusetts counties within a matter of minutes.
Authorities have not announced when additional information, including the identities of those involved or any findings regarding motive, will be released.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
