Body Found Near Stadium Where Iran National Team Is Training
Mexican authorities are investigating after a corpse was discovered outside a stadium in Tijuana where Iran’s national soccer team has been training ahead of its upcoming World Cup match against New Zealand.
Officials said the body was found Friday in a parking lot across from Estadio Caliente. Authorities said the corpse was inside a bag located in the trunk of a gray vehicle. Police reportedly opened the vehicle after detecting a strong odor. The investigation remains ongoing.
Ukrainian Drone Strike Kills One in Southern Russia
A Ukrainian drone attack killed one person and injured three others in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, local officials said Saturday.
The attack is part of Ukraine’s ongoing campaign of strikes targeting military and energy infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. Authorities in the region reported one fatality and three injuries as a result of the strike.
Top Haitian Security Official Kidnapped
Authorities in Haiti are investigating the kidnapping of a senior government official and security expert.
James Boyard, cabinet director of Haiti’s Defense Ministry and inspector general of the country’s police force, was abducted earlier this week by armed men. Officials said the incident occurred in an area of the capital generally considered one of the safer locations in the city.
Authorities have not identified those responsible for the kidnapping. Boyard is believed to be the highest-ranking official abducted in Haiti in recent years as gang violence continues to plague the Caribbean nation.
Toronto Police Officer Killed During Operation
A Toronto police officer was fatally shot Thursday while participating in an operation connected to a shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto that occurred in March.
Police said the incident happened at a high-rise building in North York. Officers assigned to the Emergency Task Force were carrying out multiple search warrants tied to a series of shootings, including the consulate shooting.
Authorities said one suspect was shot and hospitalized while in custody. A second suspect remained at large and was described by police as “armed and dangerous.” A manhunt remains underway.
Woman Critically Injured in Shark Attack Near Sydney
An Australian lifeguard helped rescue a woman who suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a white shark off a popular beach in Sydney on Saturday.
Police said the 35-year-old woman sustained serious injuries to her leg and arm during the attack at Coogee Beach. Ambulance officials said she had been swimming with two friends about 100 feet from shore when the shark attacked.
Lifeguard Tony Waller said the shark was approximately 11 feet long. Emergency crews responded to the scene and the woman was transported for medical treatment.
