BELLINGHAM, Mass. — What began as a road rage confrontation on a busy Bellingham roadway ended with a loaded firearm recovered, an arrest in a neighboring community and multiple criminal charges filed in court.
According to police, the incident unfolded at approximately 6:43 p.m. on June 2 when the Bellingham Public Safety Communications Center received a report of a male party pointing a firearm at another male party following a road rage incident on Maple Street.
The allegation immediately transformed what could have been a routine traffic dispute into a potentially dangerous public safety situation. Reports of firearms being displayed during road rage incidents are among the most volatile calls law enforcement officers encounter because confrontations that begin with anger behind the wheel can escalate in seconds.
Bellingham Police Officers responded to the area and quickly identified a suspect vehicle and operator. Investigators then expanded the search beyond town lines, notifying the Franklin Police Department and requesting officers there be on the lookout for the suspect.
A short time later, Franklin Police Officers located the suspect still inside the vehicle in the parking lot of the 99 Restaurant in Franklin.
The investigation rapidly shifted to that location as Bellingham officers responded to assist. Police said officers interviewed the suspect and recovered a loaded firearm.
The suspect was identified by authorities as Stephen Fahey, 61, of Franklin.
Following the investigation, Fahey was placed under arrest and transported to the Bellingham Police Department for booking.
The case now moves from the roadside to the courtroom.
Police said Fahey was arraigned in Milford District Court on charges including Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, Carrying a Firearm While Intoxicated and Disturbing the Peace.
The allegation involving carrying a firearm while intoxicated adds another layer of seriousness to the case. Authorities have not released additional information regarding the circumstances that led to the charge.
Investigators also have not released details regarding what specifically triggered the road rage encounter or whether the individuals involved knew one another prior to the incident.
The arrest highlights how quickly disputes between motorists can escalate beyond verbal confrontations. What begins with frustration, aggressive driving or a disagreement on the roadway can rapidly evolve into a criminal investigation when a weapon is allegedly introduced into the encounter.
Police credited the cooperation between departments for the swift identification and apprehension of the suspect.
The Bellingham Police Department thanked the Franklin Police Department for its assistance in the investigation and apprehension of the suspect.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
