Portland is playing like one of the hottest teams in the Eastern League right now, and Wednesday night only added more fuel to that growing momentum.
Less than 24 hours after blanking Hartford 9-0, the Sea Dogs returned to Delta Dental Park and delivered another offensive statement, defeating the Hartford Yard Goats 10-7 to secure their second straight victory in the six-game series. Portland’s lineup overwhelmed Hartford throughout the night, pounding out timely hits, launching multiple home runs and continuing a surge that has transformed the club from an early-season underachiever into a legitimate contender in the Northeast Division race.
The biggest stars of the night were Johanfran Garcia and Ahbram Liendo, who repeatedly punished Hartford pitching and sparked an offense that never seemed to slow down. Both players collected three hits, and both left the yard as Portland continued its recent power surge. The duo combined for six hits and multiple runs batted in, setting the tone for an offense that produced double-digit runs for the second consecutive night.
For Johanfran Garcia, it was another reminder of the impact he can have when locked in at the plate. The slugger delivered three hits, including a home run, while driving in multiple runs and helping Portland maintain offensive pressure from the opening innings through the late stages of the game. Every time Hartford appeared ready to mount a comeback, the Sea Dogs had an answer, and Garcia was often at the center of it.
Ahbram Liendo was equally impressive. The versatile infielder matched Garcia hit for hit, finishing with three knocks of his own while launching a home run and producing several key RBI. His ability to contribute throughout the lineup has become increasingly important during Portland’s recent winning stretch, and Wednesday night provided another example of why the Sea Dogs have become such a difficult club to contain offensively.
Portland’s production extended well beyond its two biggest stars. Nelly Taylor delivered three RBI, providing additional damage in key situations and ensuring Hartford could never fully recover after falling behind. Will Turner added to the assault in the seventh inning when he launched his sixth home run of the season, another swing that helped keep the Yard Goats at arm’s length.
While the offense generated most of the headlines, Portland’s pitching staff did enough to secure the victory despite Hartford’s seven-run effort. Cade Feeney earned the win and improved to 2-2 on the season after working 2.1 innings. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits and helped stabilize the game during a period when Hartford was attempting to climb back into contention.
The final innings belonged to Reidis Sena, who continued to establish himself as one of the most reliable arms in Portland’s bullpen. Sena worked two scoreless innings, did not allow a hit and struck out three batters while collecting his fourth save of the season. His dominant finish prevented Hartford from creating any late drama and sealed another important victory for a club that continues to gain momentum as the calendar turns toward summer.
The win improved Portland to 28-24 and continued one of the organization’s best stretches of the season. After spending much of the first month searching for consistency, the Sea Dogs have suddenly become one of the Eastern League’s most dangerous teams. Wednesday’s victory marked Portland’s 11th win in its last 14 games, a remarkable turnaround that has pushed the club firmly back into the playoff conversation.
For Hartford, the loss dropped the Yard Goats to 27-24 and represented a frustrating setback after entering the series following one of their strongest stretches of the year. The Yard Goats had won nine of 11 games before arriving in Portland and appeared to be building serious momentum atop the Northeast Division standings. Instead, they have watched the Sea Dogs take the first two games of the series while exposing vulnerabilities in both the pitching staff and bullpen.
The significance of Portland’s recent surge cannot be overlooked. Just weeks ago, the Sea Dogs were struggling to stay above water in a competitive division. Now they are stacking wins, producing offense throughout the lineup and receiving enough pitching to win consistently. The confidence level inside the clubhouse appears dramatically different than it did earlier this season, and the results continue to reflect that change.
With another victory secured and the offense firing on all cylinders, Portland now turns its attention to Thursday morning’s matchup at Delta Dental Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. as the Sea Dogs look to continue their remarkable run and move one step closer to another series victory against a division rival. For a team that suddenly appears to be finding its identity at exactly the right time, Wednesday night’s performance was another loud statement that Portland intends to remain a factor in the Eastern League race.
