HARTFORD — Governor Ned Lamont announced Friday that Connecticut is activating its Severe Cold Weather Protocol starting at noon Friday, January 23, and running through noon Wednesday, January 28, as a blast of extreme cold grips the state. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall into the single digits with wind chills dipping below zero.

“This protocol enables us to partner with municipalities and nonprofits to see that shelters and warming centers are available for anyone in need,” Lamont said. “I also urge everyone to bring their pets indoors during this period because these conditions can be extremely dangerous for them, as well.” Officials stressed that prolonged exposure to these temperatures could be life-threatening, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Under the protocol, state agencies and municipalities are coordinating with United Way 2-1-1 and Connecticut’s network of shelters to provide protection from the severe cold, including transportation to shelters for those in need. Anyone seeking shelter or warming centers is urged to visit 211ct.org or call 2-1-1.

The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will use its WebEOC communications network to monitor shelter capacity across the state. Local officials can alert 2-1-1 when temporary shelters or warming centers are opened. The Departments of Social Services, Housing, and Mental Health and Addiction Services will coordinate with 2-1-1 and the Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness to provide transportation for those seeking refuge.

State officials said the Severe Cold Weather Protocol ensures rapid coordination across agencies and nonprofits to keep residents safe during what is expected to be some of the coldest temperatures Connecticut has experienced this season.
