The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals and American Airlines have announced a partnership marking a milestone year for both organizations, linking OBAP’s 50th anniversary with American Airlines’ upcoming centennial in 2026.

American Airlines will serve as the title sponsor of OBAP’s 50th anniversary celebration, a role that underscores a shared commitment to expanding access and opportunity in aviation and aerospace careers. The partnership highlights five decades of OBAP’s work to increase awareness, education, and professional pathways for individuals who historically have been underrepresented in the industry, while also recognizing American Airlines’ 100-year legacy of global air travel.

The collaboration draws on a history of barrier-breaking that predates OBAP’s founding. In 1964, American Airlines hired Captain David E. Harris, the first Black commercial airline pilot. A decade later, Harris joined other aviation pioneers to establish what was then known as the Organization of Black Airline Pilots. The group later evolved into the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, broadening its mission beyond piloting to include the full spectrum of aerospace careers. That early effort to build a professional network and mentorship pipeline continues to shape the organization’s work today.

The anniversary partnership will formally begin Jan. 13 with an event at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport, the site of OBAP’s first meeting. The gathering is expected to bring together founders, industry leaders, and invited guests to reflect on the organization’s origins and its growth over five decades.

The celebration will continue throughout the year and culminate with OBAP’s 50th anniversary conference, scheduled for Aug. 12–14 in Chicago. Conference programming will include the premiere of a documentary, a Hall of Fame induction, an awards gala, youth-focused engagement activities, career development workshops, and networking opportunities for pilots, engineers, technicians, and industry partners from across the aerospace sector.

The dual anniversaries come at a moment when aviation leaders are increasingly focused on workforce development and long-term sustainability in the industry. For OBAP, the milestone underscores the scope of its reach since its founding in 1976. The nonprofit reports that it engages more than 20,000 students each year through youth programs and provides ongoing career development, training, and advocacy for aerospace professionals worldwide.

As American Airlines approaches 100 years of operation and OBAP marks 50 years of organizational impact, the partnership reflects a convergence of history and forward-looking goals, emphasizing continued efforts to broaden participation and opportunity across the aerospace industry.
