An on-duty Uxbridge, Massachusetts, police officer was killed in a crash on Route 146 early Wednesday while assisting another motorist, authorities said.
The crash occurred at about 12:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Route 146 near mile marker 5.6. The officer, who has not yet been publicly identified, was helping a driver on the highway when the collision happened, according to police and town officials.
“Despite lifesaving efforts by emergency responders, the officer succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision,” Uxbridge police said in a statement.
Uxbridge Police Chief Marc Montminy described the death as a profound loss to both the department and the town.
“This is a devastating loss for our department and our community,” Montminy said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, loved ones, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time.”
Emergency responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene, but the officer was pronounced dead from their injuries, according to the town clerk. Counseling services are being made available to members of the Uxbridge Police Department and others affected by the incident.
More than five hours after the crash, a solemn procession led by Massachusetts State Police escorted the medical examiner and fellow officers off Route 146, marking the end of the initial response at the scene.
Route 146 remained closed for several hours as investigators processed the area. Massachusetts State Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from Uxbridge police. Further details about the circumstances of the crash have not been released, and authorities have not said whether charges will be filed.
Uxbridge police said the officer’s identity will be released at a later time.
