WASHINGTON, D.C. — Five people were shot near Georgia Avenue and Howard Place NW Friday night, sending crowds running and triggering a massive police response as Howard University’s Homecoming weekend was underway. D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said all five victims — four adults and a teenager — were rushed to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to investigators, gunfire erupted following a confrontation between two individuals near the bustling Georgia Avenue corridor. Police quickly took two suspects into custody and recovered three guns near the scene. The violence caused chaos as dozens of people sprinted down Georgia Avenue seeking safety, many taking shelter at a nearby McDonald’s.
Howard University officials were quick to clarify that the shooting was not linked to the school’s festivities. “This incident was not affiliated with Howard University, and no Howard University students, faculty, or staff were involved,” the university said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of the Howard University community is our highest priority.”
The school said its police department has stepped up patrols and coordinated with D.C. police throughout Homecoming weekend, adding that enhanced security measures will remain in place. “We are deeply grateful for the swift and coordinated response,” the statement read.
The shooting came as Howard’s campus buzzed with returning alumni and celebrations, including the Alumni & Friends Welcome Reception and the popular Greek Step Show — a highlight of the school’s Homecoming weekend.
