The Massachusetts Pirates are sailing out of the Bay State.
After seven seasons of arena football, the team announced over the weekend that it will not return for an eighth season in Massachusetts. The Pirates played five years at Worcester’s DCU Center before moving to the Tsongas Center in Lowell for the past two seasons.
In a statement, the team said, “Details of the organization’s future home venue and market are being finalized, and an announcement is scheduled for the near future.”
While the Pirates have not officially revealed their next destination, sources close to the team told NewsTalk New England that a potential move to Florida is being considered.
“Founder, President, and General Manager Jawad Yatim, who was born and raised in Massachusetts, will never forget the people who contributed to the success of the franchise and supported the Pirates over the years, helping turn his vision of bringing a winning arena football organization to his home state a reality,” the team’s statement said.
The departure marks the end of professional arena football in New England — at least for now.
