Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Saturday ahead of his trip to Israel and the U.K., emphasizing the U.S.-Israeli relationship and the priority of securing the release of 48 hostages held by Hamas. Rubio stressed that the President wants the conflict resolved quickly and fully, including the defeat of Hamas, the safe return of all hostages, and long-term stability in Gaza. He declined to comment on specific Israeli military operations, insisting that the focus remains on next steps and outcomes.

When pressed about U.S. leverage, Rubio framed it as influence rather than leverage, noting the longstanding cooperation between the two nations. He also addressed questions about a potential U.S.-Taliban prisoner swap, saying that discussions are ongoing through the special envoy for the unlawfully detained, but any decisions would rest with the President.

Rubio acknowledged tensions over recent Israeli actions in Qatar but maintained that U.S.-Israeli ties remain strong. He noted that the administration will address the implications of last week’s events and discuss the broader plan for rebuilding Gaza and preventing future threats from Hamas.

On regional issues, Rubio cited ongoing consultations with Gulf allies and emphasized that the release of hostages and defeating Hamas remain top priorities. He also touched on the drone incursion into Poland by Russia, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine intent and possible targeting.

Rubio concluded with remarks on Charlie Kirk, saying he intends to attend his funeral and lauded Kirk’s engagement in civil discourse, calling his death both tragic and ironic given his active participation in dialogue on divisive topics.

The Secretary is scheduled to travel from September 13-18, focusing on diplomacy with Israel and the U.K., hostage negotiations, and broader Middle East security concerns.
