The Dolphins and Patriots enter Week 2 with more questions than answers, setting up one of Sunday’s trickier matchups for bettors. Miami is the slight home favorite, but after both offenses sputtered in their openers, it feels like either team could seize control with the right adjustments.
For the Dolphins, the red flags were everywhere in last week’s loss to the Colts. Tua Tagovailoa turned the ball over and never looked comfortable, the offensive line broke down repeatedly, and an offense built on speed and timing looked completely out of sync. The Colts’ heavy zone coverage clogged throwing lanes, and Miami never truly solved it. Unless Tua and the protection group bounce back, it could be another long afternoon.
The Patriots, meanwhile, showed flashes of their new identity under Mike Vrabel. His defense looked stout against the run in the opener, but losing Christian Gonzalez to a hamstring injury leaves a glaring hole against Miami’s speedy receivers. Vrabel will need to scheme up pressure and discipline in the secondary, leaning into the same zone-heavy looks that Indianapolis used to frustrate the Dolphins.
History leans heavily toward Miami, with Tagovailoa holding a 7-0 career record against New England. But that streak now runs into a Vrabel-led Patriots team that already looks tougher and more focused than in recent years. The Pats’ defense has the tools to make life difficult for Tua, while their offense — still a work in progress — will need to avoid the kind of mistakes that cost them in Week 1.
Miami still boasts the more explosive roster and the benefit of home-field heat. If the offensive line stabilizes, their playmakers can flip the game quickly. But the Patriots’ discipline and defensive front could give them the edge if this turns into another grind-it-out affair.
Prediction: Dolphins 20, Patriots 17. Miami snaps out of its funk just enough at home, but Vrabel’s defense keeps it closer than the line suggests.
