Cincinnati hosts Jacksonville on Sunday in a matchup that looks like it could come down to the wire. On paper, the Bengals have the edge. Home-field advantage, Joe Burrow under center, and a dynamic receiving duo make Cincinnati the favorite. But history and Week 1 performance suggest this won’t be a cakewalk. The Bengals are notoriously slow starters, and last week was no exception. It took them until late in the game to find rhythm, which puts pressure on them against a Jaguars team that came out of the gate firing.
Jacksonville impressed in Week 1, particularly on the ground. Travis Etienne looked unstoppable, slicing through the Panthers’ defensive front, and if the Jaguars can establish a consistent rushing attack, they have a real chance to control the clock and keep Burrow off the field. Protection for Trevor Lawrence was solid against a soft pass rush, but Cincinnati’s defensive line presents a tougher test. Lawrence’s ability to handle that pressure will go a long way toward determining if Jacksonville can steal a road win.
The Bengals will need Burrow to play like the late-game magician we’ve seen in playoff runs. Their offense starts slow, but once the chemistry clicks, the duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins can exploit the Jaguars’ secondary if given space. The question is whether Cincinnati can generate that space consistently early, before Jacksonville’s running game sets the tempo.
This is a clash of styles. The Bengals want to stretch the field, get quick strikes, and rely on Burrow’s arm talent to put up points in bursts. The Jaguars aim to ground-and-pound, control the clock, and force mistakes. Turnovers and penalties could swing momentum quickly, and both teams will be watching those factors closely.
Expect a low-to-mid scoring, tense game. Cincinnati’s home-field edge and late-game capability make them the favorite, but Jacksonville’s Week 1 momentum, Etienne’s rushing prowess, and a solid offensive line make them dangerous. A Bengals win is likely, but don’t be surprised if the Jaguars hang around until the final drive.
Prediction: Bengals 24, Jaguars 21. Cincinnati ekes it out behind Burrow’s poise, but Jacksonville keeps it close, proving they’re a team to watch early in the season.
